Redwood, Dawn

Metasequoia glyptostroboides

The Dawn Redwood is one of the oldest trees on earth.  Native to coastal ranges along the Pacific coast, this tree is truly unique.  In the summer one would consider it to be an evergreen, but as winter approaches and it begins to defoliate you would realize it's deciduous.  The Dawn Redwood can grow up to 90 feet tall, but in less favorable and controlled areas will average about 50 feet and 15-30 feet wide.
