Pine, Japanese Umbrella

Sciadopitys verticillata

Native to Japan, the Japanese Umbrella Pine is a slow growing evergreen. Although it is called a pine tree, it's actually in a family all by itself.  The unique needles and growing habits are unlike any other tree.  Fairly dense in its youth, with age it is more open. Cones appear on older trees, but take two years to mature. It is a great choice for rock gardens, open ground, or containers. Also can be used for bonsai.  Hardy to Zone 5.
