Nyssa Sylvatica

The Black Tupelo is a good street tree if not heavily polluted; does not tolerate standing water; good honey plant for bees; fruit attracts birds. Pyramidal when young; opens with age; some branches are pendulous; right angled branches are attractive in winter. Sun to partial shade; prefers moist, well drained soil; tolerates wet soil and clay. Fall colors are outstanding showing a mixture of yellow, orange, red or purple. Produces small purple fruit.  Hardy to USDA Zone 3.
